When Melbourne and Tianjin became sister cities in 1980, it was an act of faith. Less than a decade after diplomatic relations had resumed between Australia and China, our cities forged a unique alliance. It was the first such agreement by any Australian capital city government.
To celebrate our anniversary, the following activities are planned:
• Mayor Huang of Tianjin will visit Melbourne accompanied by an official delegation and business delegation of up to 150 members from Tianjin.
• Mayor Huang’s visit to Melbourne will include a visit with the Premier of Victoria, a tour of Docklands and Melbourne’s heritage redevelopment projects. He will also be guest of honour at the ‘Australia China Business Council ‘Building Prosperity Together Melbourne–Tianjin luncheon,’ and there will be a signing of the Melbourne–Tianjin 30th anniversary declaration.
• In October 2010, an outbound business mission to Tianjin is planned, with Melbourne businesses invited to attend.
