Tips for Dogs in Docklands

Those new to the inner city are often concerned about caring for their dogs in an urban environment. In our experience dogs cope very well living in confined spaces, as long as their owners organise plenty of walks. Both dogs and humans benefit from the extra quality time spent together.

Older dogs moving from larger properties usually adapt quickly, as long as they are house trained and well socialised.

They need several walks each day, for toileting and exercise; there are dog walking services available to help out with this. Note that with many dogs using local parks and beaches together, it is important that their vaccinations and worm and flea prevention are kept up to date.

When bringing a new puppy home it is essential to be prepared. A checkup by your vet, with advice on worm and flea treatment, is a good start. A premium quality puppy food offered several times daily will normally provide all a puppy’s nutritional requirements. A quiet place to sleep with a comfortable dog bed should be provided.

Housetraining can be an issue, especially if owners are at work for long periods. It is usually not advisable to leave a young puppy alone on a windy balcony while owners are out, so confining to a small space indoors with newspaper or training pads on the floor may be preferable.

Early vaccination of pups with the new vaccines now available allows them to start toileting outside in shared areas sooner, with little risk of catching serious diseases such as Parvovirus. Ask your vet for advice.

Socialisation early in life with lots of positive new experiences is very beneficial to your puppy’s personality.

With the right care our dogs can enjoy living in Docklands as much as we humans.
