On Track For Spring Racing Fashion Trends

As the weather warms up and the days become longer, the collective Melbourne consciousness turns to an annual highlight on the national sport and fashion calendar – Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. The Carnival brings an influx of domestic and international visitors to our fair city and is a great boost to local tourism and hospitality.

This time of year sees the previously grey Melbourne sky and cityscape awash with colour and is responsible for a considerable spike in retail spending as many strive to create the perfect look for their day at the track. As showcased during Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, there are several clear trends for this season:

Block Colour has made a significant appearance on international runways in recent seasons in a nod to the colour pop of the 80’s. Most retailers have some strong colour pieces at a variety of price points so by contrasting two or three block neon brights together and clashing a hat or accessories with your dress you can achieve a current season look at a price that suits your budget. It is wise to stick to a maximum of 3 colours and avoid fluoros at all costs. Perfect for Melbourne Cup day or Cox Plate.

Nudes and Neutrals also have a strong presence and when done well can be remarkably modern while remaining feminine. To avoid looking dull use soft beige, ivory and caramel colours in a variety of textures and fabrics to create interest and be sure to top off the look with a cocktail hat and nude coloured shoes to elongate the legs and give the illusion of extra height. A great choice
for Oaks Day!

Black is a perennial favourite for the races and your best choice for the more traditional Derby and Caulfield Cup Days. Classic black is always chic and is a good opportunity to experiment with shape. Look for good quality pieces that are well cut and a silhouette that focuses on strong shoulders or a cinched waist. Introducing white into your ensemble can make an interesting contrast but steer away from white shoes which will end up a funny shade of green after a day on the lawn.

For the guys, classic well cut dark suits will never go out of style but this year we are also seeing some of the more neutral colours come through in suiting trends - always paired with a pop of colour and great accessories. Pay attention to your shoes, cufflinks and belt, perhaps wear a race day flower or pocket handkerchief and finish the look with some great sunglasses or even a hat on Derby Day.

A word of warning to all – avoid the trash and flash of looking like you’re off to the dance floor in a too short skirt or too low top or too much make up and resist the urge to wear the entire contents of your jewellery box for your day on the track. Only wear high heels if you know you can manage walking in them the whole day without taking them off. Plan your outfit; think class and you will avoid looking back at your race day photos in horror in years to come. Finally, don’t drink to excess, remember your sunscreen and always gamble responsibly.
