Christmas giving all wrapped up

Christmas giving all wrapped up

As another festive season rolls around many of us will vow once again to avoid the mad last minute present grabbing rush, but thinking of things to buy for the friends who have everything, remembering what long lost relatives look like – let alone what they’d like for a gift - and doing some quick mental calculations and fairly creative budget stretching to figure out how to afford it all can add to the stress of the silly season.

With this in mind, when planning gifts the most important thing to remember is not how much you spend but how much thought and love goes into selecting a present. Clichéd as it may sound, it is perhaps particularly true this year as many of us struggle to find the extra cash for gifts after a year of economic struggles. Keep a budget in mind as a guide but remember that a well considered but inexpensive present will always be more fondly remembered than a last minute panic purchase worth twice the price.

Allowing plenty of time, begin your present hunting by making a list of all the lucky gift recipients, and really think about what you know about each person – what they’re about, what they like, any special hobbies and anything you have in common. From this you might think of a music or sporting event they may enjoy, a gift that will encourage them to pursue something they’ve always talked about doing but never quite got around to, or an item that will be much appreciated.

Failing that there is nothing wrong with asking for hints, making something yourself or simply writing a heartfelt card or letter. The most important thing this season is to remind those you value that they bring happiness and sunshine to your life. That is the real Christmas message.
